One of my go-to ways to unwind is playing The Sims 4. It’s been awhile since I’ve had the opportunity, but working on this blog post has me eager to get back into it! So… how exactly does The Sims 4 tie into mental health? 🧐🧠

If you’re unfamiliar with The Sims 4, it’s a life simulation game where you get to customize your own virtual character (aka “Sims”) and their homes. You also guide them through their everyday life — fulfil their needs, form connections, manage their careers, accomplish their life aspirations, etc. This game is all about unleashing your creativity; creating your own stories and exploring endless possibilities! 🎮

As mentioned, you have to fulfil your Sims’ “Needs” bar, which includes: Bladder, Fun, Hunger, Social, Energy and Hygiene. This aspect of the gameplay highlights the importance of self-care and maintaining relationships. When these needs aren’t met, Sims experience a range of moods like feeling Tense, Angry, Sad, Uncomfortable or Bored, which can affect their daily functioning. Fortunately, there are several strategies in the game to improve these moods, such as seeking social support, engaging in hobbies, etc. 🤝

Just like real life, Sims need a healthy work-life balance ⚖️ . This game serves as a fun reminder that self-care, social support and emotion regulation are crucial, not only virtually, but in real life too.

While excessive gaming has its downsides, gaming in moderation can be beneficial. For me, The Sims 4 has been both a stress relief and a creative outlet. I enjoy building and renovating homes in the game. There is no “correct” way to play; making it flexible to explore my creativity and de-stress! 🏡

Can you relate to the 6 primary needs from The Sims 4? What’s your favourite way to unwind after a long day? A gentle reminder: Don’t feel guilty for allowing yourself to take a break and rest. It’s part of self-care! Or in The Sims 4 terms, it’s about fulfilling your ‘Fun’ need. 😉✨
