Personally, in therapy, I have encountered quite a number of people who choose to smile and appear cheerful, only later noticing how much they hide their feelings.
Each time this happened, being a natural empath, I approached their emotions with care. Then, I noticed that there was a shift in emotions - those tears they shed all the way, weren't signs of weakness, rather a huge relief for them - as if a huge black stone had been lifted because they finally have the space to be attuned to themselves.
Interestingly, the comments/feedback I received were almost always the same, for instance, the sentences of, "You are really so kind" or "I feel there's a reason for me to live again" or "You can see me and I feel cared for after so long" or "I didn't expect this to happen, like the session is so well , I feel so comfortable"-all of these only make me realise that it's not so much about me, it's about them seeing what they truly deserve, honoring their inner experiences and choose to live again.
Choosing to feel again, to embrace again, to appreciate themselves. Choosing to go with their own pace in a safe environment.
So, this is also why when they thanked me, I told them the same- "say thank you to yourself more, because you are the one who chose to come here and know yourself. It's you giving a chance to yourself. "
Contrary to the common myth that crying only makes people "drown" deeper, it actually shows them that crying is okay because that emotion speaks for a need. Longing for self-expression too. Each time I see people choose to live again, I feel warmth because they manage to see that life is a gift.
Hence, here's the reminder for today- and honestly, these few days have been really touching and inspiring, so I'm also humbled that I'm able to live in peace, and see that life is a gift for me too.
I always believe that therapy is a two-way interaction - of reflection, insights and sharing. There's only pure empathy, wisdom and curiosity. So, all the clients I see bring me a new perspective of life to be seen.
"If we could see a miracle of a single flower, clearly our whole life would change."
"Stop and smell the flowers, you deserve happiness."
May all of us be kind to ourselves.
